Beginning Group Violin (Ages 4 – 6)

This intimate beginning class introduces young children to the violin. Students will learn the fundamentals of this beautiful instrument and engage in skill-building games for note reading, ear training, and ensemble playing. Our group violin classes are small and supportive, with a maximum of seven students in the class. Caregivers are welcome to attend, but are not required. A violin is required for home practice.

Suzuki Group Violin (Ages 4 – 8)

A small, supportive group class for young violinists (and their caregivers) following the Suzuki Method. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Suzuki private lessons to be eligible to enroll in this class. Please contact the NSM office for more information.
Beginning Group Piano (Ages 4 – 6)
Instructor: Lily Tseng
This small group class introduces children to basic keyboard skills in a fun and encouraging way. With playful songs, rhythm games, and beginner-friendly activities, students build a strong foundation while enjoying the process of making music. Our group piano classes are kept small and supportive, with no more than five students per class.

We ask that a caregiver stay for each lesson, both for your child's comfort and to help with practicing at home between classes. This class is just for enrolled students; we ask that younger siblings not attend the session, so caregivers can fully engage in the lesson alongside their child. A piano or 61-key keyboard is needed for home practice. Please note: the two required piano books will be automatically added to your registration at checkout.​

Training Choir (Ages 5 – 8)

Provide members with a broad experience of choral singing through music from different time periods, cultures, and genres.

Foster musical independence, leadership, self-confidence, teamwork, discipline, and commitment in all singers.

Enrich the lives of singers from all cultural and economic backgrounds.
As members of the Training Choir, singers are introduced to the fundamentals of choral singing with a focus on building the necessary skills of pitch-matching, listening, and rhythm. Rooted in the Kodály Concept, singers will perform a diverse repertoire of secular, sacred, and popular music, as well as selections representing a variety of cultures, traditions, and musical genres. This ensemble does NOT require an audition.

This semester, NSM’s Training Choir will perform with professional singers from the vocal ensemble Blue Heron on Saturday, December 19, 2026 at 8:00 pm, prior to Blue Heron's Christmas in Medieval England concert at First Church in Cambridge (Harvard Square).

The Repertory Chorus is intended as the next step in the process of vocal skill and musicianship. Rooted in the Kodály Concept, emphasis is placed on proper vocal technique, sight reading skills and musicianship. Singers explore and perform a varied repertoire that includes secular, sacred, and popular music, along with works from diverse cultures and a wide range of musical genres. This ensemble will exhibit the highest level of music making and choral singing.

This semester, NSM’s Repertory Chorus will perform with professional singers from the vocal ensemble Blue Heron on Saturday, December 19, 2026 at 8:00 pm, prior to Blue Heron's Christmas in Medieval England concert at First Church in Cambridge (Harvard Square).

Teen Voice & Guitar Ensemble (Ages 12 – 17)
Director: Cailin Smith
Calling all teen and tween singers and guitarists! This fun, collaborative class pairs vocalists and guitarists of similar ages to form musical duos, working together to learn, rehearse, and perform popular songs by artists like Taylor Swift and other favorites from today's charts.

Through guided rehearsals and coaching, students will choose songs they love, arrange them together, and build performance skills while learning what it takes to play well with others, all in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Whether you're a singer looking to perform with live instrumental backing, or a guitarist who wants to accompany vocalists and play in a band setting, this class is a great way to gain confidence, build ensemble skills, and bring your favorite songs to life.

No prior ensemble experience necessary — just a willingness to learn, collaborate, and have fun making music together.

Chamber Music (Ages 13+)
Chamber Music Coordinator: Seychelle Dunn-Corbin
Chamber music for teens allows students to grow their musical skills in a small and fun ensemble setting with their peers. Coached by members of the NSM faculty, chamber groups explore new repertoire and ensemble techniques in a social and relaxed atmosphere. Performance opportunities are also available for those groups interested in recitals and concerts.

Students will be placed in groups & paired with a coach by October 3 with an aim to begin the week of October 11.
