Joel Schenk (he/him) is a pianist and composer based in Boston, MA. While grounded in the technique and attention to detail associated with the classical repertoire, he likes to include aspects of music theory and ear training in his teaching and to foster creativity through improvisation and collaboration. He encourages the exploration of various styles (or absence thereof) in the pursuit of each student's organic and prodigious comprehension of music and musicianship.

Joel studied piano with Linda Permut and composition with Paul Brust at The Longy School of Music. In addition to his classical background, he has performed rock & roll, klezmer, and electronic music, and enjoys bringing experiences garnered across a wide spectrum of genres into the classroom. He has taught for the City of Cambridge for roughly a decade and currently maintains a studio at the Longfellow Music Program. As a composer, his works have been featured by the Rossini Music Club, Green Street Dance Studios, and When Notes Fly. He occasionally performs his own and others’ music (contemporary or otherwise) in solo and chamber settings.
